2009 Chemical Pioneer and Gold Medal Award Nominations...
The American Institute of Chemists is soliciting nominations for 2009 Chemical Pioneer Awards and for the 2009 Gold Medal Award. The former are made to those individuals who have done pioneering work in the chemical sciences, and the latter to a person who has exemplified the highest traits as a chemical scientist and as an exemplary citizen. Thus the Gold Medal Award recognizes not only scientific excellence but also contributions of the individual to the profession and to society. Nominations should consist of a nominating letter with the individual's resume plus two letters of support. All nomination materials are due by October 6, 2008 in the A.I.C. office at 315 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19106-2702. Further information may be secured from Dr. E.G. Meyer, Awards Committee Chair at 307-766-5445 or egmeyer@uwyo.edu or Dr. Margot Hall at 601-266-4912 (or 601-266-4908) or Margot.Hall@usm.edu.   read more...

New Membership Categories Effective 2006
On 05 March 2004 the Bylaws Committee recommended AIC Bylaw changes to the Board of Directors regarding Membership Categories. These changes do not affect current members as they will retain their current membership categories. The changes only affect the Associate and Affiliate categories and will allow us to expand our membership. All Member and Fellow Categories remain the same. The main purpose of the changes is to align our membership categories more closely with those of international societies so as to promote and allow cross recognition of membershp levels. See the Membership page for details   read more...

IMPORTANT NOTICE - Website User Accounts Quarterly Maintenance
A review and cleanup of AIC website user accounts has been performed. All duplicate accounts which were not active have been deleted from the system. If you wish to update your information, please do so with your existing account. Duplicate accounts and inactive accounts will be deleted on a regular basis. This policy is being implemented to preserve database space on our server, as well as contain costs for administering the website. In addition, this will prevent our members from receiving duplicate emails. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the AIC Website Administrator at aic@theaic.org. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Local Institutes are encouraged to participate in evaluation
The Local Institutes are sometimes the first contact an individual has with The AIC and while we have a number of excellent national and one international institute, there is a need to not only support the current local institutes but also resurrect those that might have atrophied such as the Philadelphia Institute. In addition to serving as an initial point of contact, the Local Institutes serve a number of other critical functions such as the Student Awards Program. This program provides recognition of undergraduate students and allows them and their classmate to be introduced to the AIC and explain our function as the Society for the Professional Chemist, which allows us to differentiate ourselves from ACS. We are "the other chemical society" and serve a different function than ACS and while taking nothing away from ACS we serve a different function. Local Institutes have developed educational programs and provide a myriad of other functions in the local area.. These institutes provide an excellent opportunity to get involved in the AIC at the grass roots level. I would welcome the chance to communicate with anyone interested in this program by mail, phone or email. Also please feel free to contact the chair of the local institute in your region. We look forward to working with you in this exciting endeavor. W.Jeffrey Hurst Chair, Local Institutes Committee
